Q

How do you safely Prepare a slide for a plant cell?

A

you can only use one layer of cell (in most examples the film of an onion) due to the use of a light microscope. you place your cell on the slide then put drops of stain (iodine). leave for approximately three or four minutes before gently placing a cover slip on top of your DNA. do not squish!

Q

How do you safely Prepare a slide for an animal cell?

A

you take one layer of cell (normally cheek cells in school) due to the use of a light microscope. rub your cheek cell swab on the centre of your slide. take some dye( methylene blue) and put drops on where you rubbed your swab. then you gently place the cover slip on your slide.

Q

how to make an uncontaminated culture?

A

o Petri dishes and culture media must be sterilised before
use
o inoculating loops used to transfer microorganisms to
the media must be sterilised by passing them through a
flame
o the lid of the Petri dish should be secured with adhesive
tape and stored upside down
o in school laboratories, cultures should generally be
incubated at 25°C.

Q

Describe why uncontaminated cultures are necessary in

research

A

it is necessary as it allows the results to not be skewed by the presence of unwanted microorganisms.
