Cell Signalling Overview Flashcards
What are the two main systems of communication in the body?
Nerve transmission and through the bloodstream.
What is the main difference between nervous communication and communication through the blood?
Nervous communication is much faster than through the blood.
What are the three main stages of neurotransmission?
- Propagation of the action potential due to ion movement.
- Neurotransmitter released from vesicles,
- Postsynaptic receptor activated by NT.
What are the chemicals that utilize the circulatory system to send messages generally referred to?
Hormones.
What produces hormones?
Most major organs, however the pituitary gland and the hypothalamus in particular play a more prominent role.
What are some key reasons for cell signaling?
To be able to process and co-ordinate information.
For self-preservation.
For voluntary movement.
For homeostasis.
