Cell Response To Stress Flashcards
What are the types of responses to cellular stress?
Atrophy, Hypertrophy, Hyperplasia, Metaplasia, Dysplasia
Atrophy
The cells get smaller in size
Hypertrophy
The cells get bigger in size
Hyperplasia
The number of cells increases
Metaplasia
The cells transform into a different type of cell
Dysplasia
Dysfunction of the cell where it deviates from shape, size, function, and structure. Most likely type to cause cancer
What are the 3 lines of defense?
1: skin/mucosa
2: macrophages and phagocytes
3: B and T cells
Where in the process does the inflammatory process begin?
Second line of defense
Cerebral Atrophy
Cells of the cerebrum get smaller due to injury and underuse. Depends on what part of the brain is affected we will see symptoms
Cardiac Hypertrophy
The cells of the heart get bigger due to working harder to send blood out to the rest of the body. Can result in MI
Acromegaly
The bones of the adult get wider which causes abnormal facial structure. Due to the pituitary gland producing too much growth hormone
Cervical Metaplasia
The cells of the cervix change from one type to another and is mostly asymptomatic but is detected by pap smear
