Cell Organelles Flashcards
Stores material within the cell
Vacuoles
Usually in pairs that aid in cell division
Centricles
The sites of protein synthesis
Ribosomes
Transports material within the cell
Endoplasmic Reticulum
The region inside the cell except for the nucleus
Cytoplasm
Organelle that manages or controls all the cell functions in a eukaryotic cell
Nucleolus
Has pores that allow ribosomes to escape
Cell membrane
Digests excess or worn out cell parts, food particles and invading viruses or bacteria
Lyosome
Small bumps located on portions of the endoplasmic reticulum
Ribosome
Longer whip like structure used for movement
Flagellum
Produces a useable form of energy for the cell
Mitochondrion
Packages proteins for transport out of the cell
Golgi apparatus
Stable cytoskeletal elements; resist mechanical forces acting on the cell
Intermediate filaments
Everything inside the cell including the nucleus
Organelles
Site where ribosomes are made
Nucleolus
Made of actin and helps with muscle contraction
Microfilaments
The membrane surrounding the cell
Cell membrane
Cylindrical structures made of tubulin proteins
Microtubules
Granular threadlike DNA material of the active cell
Chromatin
Tubular extensions of the plasma membrane that increase the area for absorption
Microvilli
Small hair like structures used for movement or sensing things
Cilia
Composed of phospholipid bilayer
Cell membrane
Membranous sacs containing a variety of powerful enzymes (oxidase and catalases)
Peroxisomes
In what organelle does cellular respiration take place?
The mitochondria
What is the list of organelles that take part in protein synthesis?
The nucleus, ribosomes, rough endoplasmic reticulum, and the golgi apparatus
How is the nucleus involved in protein synthesis?
The RNA polymerase unzips and reads one side of the DNA strand (found in the nucleus) and mRNA is formed
How does the membrane of cell differ from the nuclear membrane? What advantages does this difference have for the nucleus?
The cell membrane protects the cell while the nuclear membrane only protects the nucleus. This advantages the nucleus because it gets twice the protection.
What is the difference between rough ER and smooth ER?
Rough ER has ribosomes and smooth ER doesn’t
What is the first step of protein synthesis?
Transcription
What is the second step of protein synthesis?
Translation
Where does the first step of protein synthesis occur?
In the nucleus
Where does the second step of protein synthesis occur?
Cytoplasm and ribosomes
How many nitrogen bases are read at a time?
3
What are the bases on mRNA strands called?
Codons
What are the bases on tRNA called?
Anti-codons
What is the start codon?
AUG
What are the stop codons?
UAG, AUG, UAA
