Cell Membrane Flashcards
What is a phospholipid?
Basic unit of the cell membrane; forms a protective biylar that regulates substance movement in and out of the cell
What is a channel protein?
Helps transport specific substances and small molecules across the cell membrane
What is a Receptor Protein?
Embedded into the membrane;receives information from other cells in the form of chemical signals
What is a Glycoprotein?
Helps with cell recognition and signaling, protects cells, provides structural support, assists in transporting molecules across the cell membrane
What is passive transport?
When no energy is needed to transport
In passive transport how do concentrations flow
High to low concentrations
In passive transport how do small uncharged molecules or atoms move?
They can move straight through the membrane
What is simple diffusion?(passive transport)
Random movement of molecules from high to low concentration
What is facilitated diffusion?
Type of passive transport that involves movement of molecules across the cell membrane with the help of transport proteins
What is isotonic solution?(osmosis)
When water moves in and out of the cell at equal rates
What is hypotonic solution? (Osmosis)
When water moved into the cell bc the concentration of nutrients in lower outside the cell
What is hypertonic solution?(osmosis)
When water moved out of the cell bc the concentration of nutrients is higher outside the cell
What is Active transport?
When energy is needed to transport
What is endocytosis?
Process by which a cell membrane forms a vesicle around a substance to bring it into the cell
What is Exocytosis?
When a large substance leaves the cell;vesicles bring the substance to the cell membrane and then release it
