Cell Division Flashcards
Who is a cancer to Manchester United Football Club
Paul Pogba
What are the hallmarks of cancer development?
- Autonomy from growth signals
- Evasion of growth inhibition
- Unlimited replication
- Invasion and metastases
- Angiogenesis
- Evasion of cell death
What are the three main processes that cancer cell numbers are controlled?
- Proliferation
- Cell Death - apoptosis
- Differentiation
What are the three main classifications of carcinogens?
- Radiation
- Chemical
- Infections
What vaccination can protect against cervical cancer?
The human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine
What happens in the G0 Phase?
Resting Phase, where cells perform their preprogrammed roles or specialised function.
What happens in the G1 Phase?
Interphase where the cell proteins and RNA are synthesised, including the proteins required for DNA synthesis
What happens in the S Phase?
Synthesis of a second copy of DNA
What happens in the G2 Phase?
DNA Synthesis stops but RNA and protein synthesis continues, also the mitotic spindles precursors are formed
What happens in M Phase?
Mitosis! Cell divides after DNA segregation and produces a daughter cell
What are phase specific drugs?
They have an effect only at a specific point in the cell cycle
What are phase nonspecific drugs?
They have an effect anywhere in the cell cycle EXCEPT G0.
What are cycle nonspecific drugs?
They have an effect at any point in the cell cycle INCLUDING G0
