CDT Quiz-The layers of Earth Flashcards
What is Earth’s crust made out of?
Brittle rock
How thick is the crust of the Earth?
5-60 km, 3-40 mi
What is the mantle made out of?
Taffy-like rocks
How thick is the mantle of the Earth?
2,900 km, 1,800 mi
How thick is the core of the Earth?
3,500 km, 2,100 mi
What two parts can the Earth’s core be boken into?
The inner core and the outter core
What is the outter core made up of?
Liquid Fe&Ni
How hot is the outer core?
8,000 degrees F
What is the inner core made up of?
Solid Fe&Ni
How hot is the inner core?
11,000 degrees F, the hottest place on Earth
Why is the inner core solid?
Pressure form the overlying layers prevents atoms from moving in the inner core (they are forced to be a solid)
What are the two tyeps of crust?
Oceanic and contidental
Discribe oceanic crust
This crust is thin (5-10 km, 3-6 mi). It is manily made out of mafic rock (ex: basalt), density of 3.0 g/cm, makes up 70% of Earth’s crust
Desribe continental crust
Thick (10-60 km, 6-40 mi), made out of felsic rock (ex: granite), has a density of 2.7g/cm, makes up 30% of the Earth’s crust
If oceanic and continental crust collided, which would be more likely to sink under the other? Why?
Oceanic. This crust is much more desner than contidental and when somthing has a a high density, it sinks.
