CB1f Enzyme Action Flashcards
Describe the shape of a protein
Large 3D molecule formed from a chain of amino acids
Describe the active site
The region on an enzyme that binds to a protein or other substance during a reaction
Only the substrate molecule with the right shape will fit into the enzyme allowing the reaction to take place, true or false?
True
Describe the Lock and Key hypothesis
When the substrate will fit into the active site when it has a complementary shape. The substrate acts as a key and the lock acts as a lock.
When does an enzyme work best?
When it is at the optimum temperature or pH
What affects the enzymes rate of reaction?
Temperature
pH
Substrate concentration
How does temperature affect enzymes?
When the temperature is too low the reaction will be slow to take place. Once the temperature is optimum - usually at 37 degrees celsius, the enzyme will work at its fastest rate. If the temperature gets too high the enzyme will denature and no longer catalyse a reaction.
What are enzymes?
Biological catalysts that speed up chemical reactions without getting used up
