How are cathedrals different from churches?
Cathedrals are run by bishops whereas churches are run by pastors or priests. Cathedrals also have a bishops seat and they are usually larger and look better
What is a bishop?
A leader of a diocese, and has a special chair in the Cathedral that he runs.
What is a diocese?
the Anglican and Roman Catholic Churches divided up the country into areas, these are called dioceses and are run by a bishop
What is a cathedral?
A cathedral is a church that has the seat of the local bishop. Usually the most beautiful and or largest church in the diocese
What is the bishop’s seat?
A large chair, often beautifully carved in wood. The bishop sits on it when he conducts a service in the cathedral
What was the nave (long passage way) down the center of the cathedral often used for in previous ages?
A shelter for traders to sell their goods
What is a rood screen?
A screen that was made in front of the cathedral to separate business and worship
Why is it called a rood screen?
Because it often contained a rood (a cross) in its design
