Castles And Medieval Towns Flashcards
Describe stone keep castle
It was made in 1070. It had thick walls, square based towers and was made of stone.
Describe improved deisgns
It was made in 1150, the period where curtain walls came from. It was made of stone with round towers because if the base of a square tower was destroyed it would collapse but not with a round turret.
Describe concentric castles
They were made in 1270 and had 2 walls so if an intruder got through one wall they had another to go. They were very expensive and could take up to 10 years to make so there was not much purpose after building.
Describe motte and Bailey castles
They were made of wood because they needed to be built quickly and they took 2 weeks to build. The motte was artificially made and the Bailey is where people worked. It constantly needed repairing as wood doesn’t last long and can set on fire very quickly.
