What is a motte and bailey castle?
A motte and bailey castle is a typical type of castle/fortress built by the normans.
what is the bailey?
This was the lower level where it was usually used for living and working in.
What is the motte?
The motte was a man-made hill that could be constructed fast in a couple of days.
It provided height advantage and it was harder to attack.
what was the keep?
The strongest and most protected part of the castle. It was used as last line of defense.
what is the palisade?
A palisade (fence) was constructed to offer better protection. It was usually made out of wood to begin.
what is the moat/ditch
It was built surrounding the motte and bailey. It made it harder for people to attack because if they get to close they will fall in the ditch.
What was the drawbridge?
This was set to protect the entrance.
The bridge was usually built upon a chain or a rope providing emergency protection during the time of trouble.
3 Pros/advantages of motte and bailey castle
quick to build-can take a couple of days.
The castles provided high ground so it was harder to get attacked and they could see far up ahead to see if they would be getting attacked.
It is hard to actually get into the castles as there is 1 entrance and exit and that is a drawbridge.

- it can be burnt easily as it is built out of wood.
- villages are at high risk
- there is one entrance and exit
