irony is the difference between the ways things are and the way things should be, or the way things are expected to be. cartoonists often use irony to express their opinion on an issue.
define satire in cartoons
satire is the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people’s stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues
define caricature in cartoons
a picture that exaggerates a persona’s features to produce a comic or grotesque effect. political cartoonists often use caricature to illustrate the character of their subject
what are political/ editorial cartoons used for
mostly for satire. the cartoonists ridicules his subject, while at the same time making the audience think about the bitter reality of the situation
what is the purpose of a comic strip
consists of a series of “frames” which, when read in order, tell a story. the intention can be to entertain or to make us laugh. graphic novels and comic books are examples of comic strips being used to create a narrative on a bigger scale
some comic strips combine entertainment with social commentary (madam and eve)
some aim to raise social awareness in a way that is both visually appealing and easy to understand
