Cardiovascular Systems Flashcards
Atria
Receiving chambers of heart
Ventricle
Chambers of heart below the atria. Thick and muscular
Coronary arteries
Arteries that supply blood to the heart
Pericardium
Outer, fibrous layer of heart
Myocardium
Muscular wall of heart located between pericardium and endocardium
Endocardium
Inner, smoother lining of the heart
Sinoatrial node
Specialized muscle fibers that acts as pacemaker of the heart located at entrance at right atrium
Atrioventricular node
Receives electrical signals from SA node and transmits to rest of heart. Controls heart rate. Is located in wall of right atrium at the interstitial septum.
Ischemia
Inadequate oxygen supply to tissues due to lack of blood flow
Angina Pectoris
Cheat pain, myocardium becomes ischemic caused by coronary artery narrowing or spasm resulting in ischemic heart disease
Emboli
Thrombus breaks away from wall and travels through the blood stream
Aortic aneurysm
Localized pathologic enlargement of the aorta
AV Block
Progressively longer PR interval that can lead to atria and ventricles beating independently of each other
Arrhythmia
Abnormal beating or rhythm of heart
Atrial fibrillation
Irregularly irregular heart rate with no discrete P waves
