Cardiovascular anatomy Flashcards
what does the cardiovascular system comprise of
heart
capillaries
arteries
arterioles
blood
veins
venules
what does the blood do
it is circulated around the body by the heart and transports
oxygen
nutrients
hormones
antibodies
waste
heat
clotting factors
what is the composition of blood
55% plasma 45% white blood cells and platelets
what is contained in the plasma
proteins
enzymes
ions
waste
nutrients
water
what are red blood cells
they are non nucleated cells with a biconcave shape
they have a large surface area to allow oxygen to bind to haemoglobin
they contain iron
they come from res bone marrow
what are leukocytes
these are white blood cells and they fight against infection
what are platelets
they are non nucleated and they come from bone marrow
they promote blood clotting and aid in the healing if blood vessels
what is eGFR
this is the estimated time for waste to be excreted from both kidneys
what are th main difference between arteries and veins
veins have a thinner wall and thinner tunica media
wht is vasoconstriction
this is when the arteries constrict and the lumen size decreases causing blood to flow against resistance
what is vasodilation
this is when the arteries expand and the lumen size increases and blood flows without resistance
what is venous return
blood flows from the heart to the
aorta- arteries-arterioles-capillaries-venules-veins-vena cava- heart
what is the conducting system
a system in which cardiac muscle automatically is stimulated to contract via neuromuscular cells
