Cardiovacular System Flashcards
The cardiovascular system is a double system
Deoxygenated blood flows into the right atrium and then the right ventricle and to the lungs
Oxygenated blood flows into the left atrium and then the left ventricle and to the body
Structure of the heart
- Muscular walls provide strong heartbeat
- Muscle on left ventricle is thicker as it needs to pump blood around the whole body
- 4 chambers to separate oxygen rich from oxygen poor
- valves to stop back-flow of blood
Process(vavavava pattern)
Blood flows through the right atrium via the vena cava, atrium contracts, ventricle contracts pushing blood into pulmonary artery(to lungs),pulmonary vein pushes blood to the heart from the lungs,to the body via the aorta
Arteries veins and capillaries
Arteries-thick walls,thin lumen(gap)
Capillaries-small(one cell thick-diffusion), large surface area
Veins-valves, thin walls,thick lumen(little pressure)
Cardiovascular disease
Fatty deposits build up in the coronary arteries Formation of blood clots Blood clot can block artery Restrict oxygen to some cells Cells die Heart attack
Cardiovascular disease risk factors
Smoking
High blood pressure
Too much salt or fat (high cholesterol)
