To identify a behaviour pattern from similarities between offences
Why were sexual offences chosen for this study?
Because there is a great deal of information available about the perpetrator’s actions.
What type of analysis was used to analyse the data?
It was subjected to a smallest-space analysis.
Which variables were found to be central to the 66 cases of sexual assault?
Vaginal intercourse, no reaction to the victim, impersonal language, surprise attack and the victims clothing being disturbed.
What do these variables suggest?
This suggests a pattern of behaviour where the attack is impersonal and sudden and the victims response is irrelevant to the offender.
After the main variables, there were other variables that were really important in other research. What were they?
Attempted intimacy with the victim, sexual behaviour, overt violence and aggression, impersonal interaction, and criminal behaviour and intent.
What does Canter believe is useful about this research?
That all 5 aspects have now been shown to contribute to all sexual offences but in different patterns for different individuals, this can lead to seeing how offenders behaviour changes over offences, or to see if two or more offences are linked to the same person.
