Appeal
A request made after a trial by a party that has lost on one or more issues that a higher court review the decision to determine if it was correct
Breach of contact
when an individual or organisation breaks terms previously agreed in a contract
Claimant/plaintiff
a person who goes to court to make a legal complaint against someone else
Class action
a lawsuit in which one or more members of a large group, or class, of individuals or other entities sue on behalf of the entire class
Compliance
Conforming to a requirements
Crime
an action or omission which constitutes an offence and is punishable by law. Examples are assault, robbery and cybercrime.
Damages
Compensation typically of money, paid to a person or organisation for loss or injury.
Defendant
An individual, company, or institution sued or accused in a court of law.
Duty of care
A moral or legal obligation to ensure the safety or well-being of others.
A fine
A penalty that requires someone to pay a sum of money fixed by law after an offense has been committed.
Fraud
Intentional misrepresentation or concealment of an important fact upon which the victim is meant to rely, and in fact does rely, to the harm of the victim.
Grounds (legal)
A reason or a justification for legal action.
Guilty
Responsible for a specified offence.
Hearing
A legal proceeding where the facts of a particular issue are looked at, and evidence is presented to help decide what the outcome should be.
Witness
Someone who sees an event, typically a crime or accident, take place
