What is a Burst fracture ?
A
A compression type injury resulting from high energy mechanisms.

What causes Burst fractures ?
A
Axial loading e.g. Fall from height or an RTC.

What are the appearances of a Burst fracture on an XRAY ?
A
Disruption to the anterior and middle columns with associated retropulsion.
Loss of vertebral body height, more pronounced at the anterior aspect pronounced at the anterior aspect.
Interpedicular distance will be increased.

What is a risk of a Burst fracture ?
A
The retropulsion of the fracture into the spinal canal can cause neurological deficit.
