How did you build a budget estimate?
1) Known rates, recent similar local works
2) Adjusted for Time, Quality and Location
What advise would you give to the client to ensure the issue would not reoccur?
1) Use copper or aluminium fixings
2) Use Slate Hooks
Did the long term repairs get undertaken?
1) Yes and No
Yes to the nursery block worst affected area. Temporary snow guards were installed to the main building to catch/ collect any slipped slates in the meantime.

What guarding did you install?
Mesh snow guard - steel. Fixed with over gutter brackets and sat just above the first tile.
How did you confirm it was Nail sickness?
Inspected batten near missing slate and identified stub of fixing in batten
Where did you install the guarding’s? Why?
Long term future of the school building is unsure. Federation school with a nearby school therefore the building may become unused in the short to medium term
Installed anywhere a tile could fall off the building and cause injury.
What advice did you give to the client?
Remove immediate risk (Fencing/security). Closures and/ or diversions.
Renew roof coverings - Once begun nail sickness can become worse. Building same age.
Install guarding to certain areas of the building depending on funding availability and long term future of the building.
What did your initial inspection find?
Tingle repairs
Slipped/. Missing Slates
Broken slates on ground below
Tiles in gutters
What did you conclude was the problem after your inspections?
Nail Sickness. Failure of fixings. Steel fixings with a coating. Nail sheared off.

Visual inspection initially
Scaffold high level inspect batten / Slipped tiles
