- Irreversible dilation, loss of cilia and mucus hypersecretion.
- Increased risk of infection due to decreased mucociliary clearance
symptoms of bronchiectasis
- Dyspnoea
- productuve Cough
- Haemoptysis
- Recurrent Cx infections
4 investigations for bronchiectasis
- chest x ray
- sputum culture
- HRCT - gold standard
- spirometry
what does chest x ray for bronchiectasis show
kerley B lines, SIGNET RING SIGN (bronchioles dilated and appear thicker than adjacent pulmonary artery)
what does spirometry for bronchiectasis show
obstructive FEV1:FVC < 0.7
what does HRCT for bronchiectasis show
(high resolution CT) = dilated thickened bronchi
what does sputum culture for bronchiectasis do
checks infectious organism
H.influenzae most common
treatment for bronchiectasis
Non-curative
Chest physio + bronchodilators + prophylactic antibiotics
