Brocas And Wernicks Area Flashcards
Where is Broca’s area
In the frontal lobe
What does Broca’s area do
-production of speech and sentence structure
-moves the muscles required to speak
Supporting evidence of localisation of function in the brain and brocas area and a limitation of it
Patient TAN
- could only say tan
-studied his brain using scans once he died and shows damage to frontal lobe
-shows speech is localised in frontal lobe and that speech production is in Broca’s area
- 8 other patients with language deficit had damage to this area
✖️- the brain was studied after death could have been damaged in removal.
-there was also damage to other areas so language could have been localised there.
✔️- objective scientific data
Side effects of damage to Broca’s area and whats it called
Brocas aphasia - trouble with speech- short simple sentences
-can’t read and write as well
Where is Wernicks areas
Temporal lobe
What does wernicks area do
-Involved in interpretation / processing of speech ‘language Comprehension centre’
What happens if wernicks area is damaged and whats it called
Wernicks aphasia- Can’t comprehend / understand language - sounds like nonsense
Evaluation of wernicks area
✖️we should study the brain holistically as no one part acts individually
✔️- MRI scans mean we study brain scientifically
