Breathing/Homeostasis Flashcards
1
Q
Inhaling
A
- Brain sends signals to muscles in diaphragm to contract.
- Ribs are pulled up and out, diaphragm flattens downwards.
- Volume of chest increases, air pressure drops, air is drawn into lungs and alveoli.
2
Q
Exhaling
A
- Rib muscles and diaphragm relax.
- Air pressure in lungs increases, air is pulled out from the alveoli.
3
Q
Homeostasis
A
The maintenance of a constant internal environment within the body.
NOTE: Homeostasis works by negative feedback.
4
Q
Functions of water in living organisms
A
- Metabolism
- Medium for chemical reactions
- Transport system
5
Q
Importance of maintenance/homeostasis
A
If not maintained, enzymes will become denatured.
6
Q
Intercostal muscles
A
Move the rib cage up and down.
7
Q
Diaphragm
A
A sheet of muscle at the base of the rib cage.
8
Q
Endotherm
A
Warm-blooded
9
Q
Ectotherm
A
Cold-blooded
