Breath and Muscles of the Anterior Trunk Flashcards
What bones make up the thoracic cage?
Sternum, Costal Bones, Thoracic Vertebrae
What is the function of the diaphragm in breathing?
The diaphragm moves interiorly on inspiration, the ribs move anteriorly and increases the volume of the ribs. The diaphragm moves superiorly on exhalation and decreases the volume of ribs as air is being released.
Originates at the costal groove and runs in a forward and down diagonal pattern to the rib below. The intercostals are presumed to be responsible for 25% of the activity to enable respiration
External Intercostals
located anteriorly and superficially to the rectus sheath. It runs from symphysis pubis to the xiphoid process. It includes three tendonous intersections to stabilize this long muscle and aid in contraction. Function: it acts primarily as a flexor of the trunk.
Rectus Abdominis
The function of the external oblique
aids in flexion and rotation of the trunk
the deepest of the four muscles. It attaches to the lateral third of the iguinal ligament and the iliac crest interdigitates with the diaphragm and anteriorly with the linea alba, a strong fibrous band running from the xiphoid process to the symphysis pubis. (where the two halves of the pubic bone meet) the fibers run horizontally
Transverse Abdominis
The function of the transverse abdominis
supports breathing, aids in flexion of the trunk, pulls in belly, you can feel it activate when you cough
What is inspiration and what happens to the ribs?
Inspiration is inhaling. The ribs move anteriorly and laterally.
