Brainstem and Cranial Nerves Flashcards
What is the brainstem comprised of?
Midbrain
Pons
Medulla
What passes through the brainstem?
All ascending and descending pathways
Where do the pathways synapse?
Many synapse in the brainstem or arise directyl from or synpase in other brainstem nuclei
How is the cerebelleum connected to the brainstem?
3 cerebellar peduncels (white fibre tracts)
Label the left hand side diagram
Which cranial nerves have their nuclei in the brainstem?
9
III-XII apart from XI
What does colliculi mean?
Little hills
What is the superior colliculus involved with?
Visual pathway
What is the inferior colliculus involved with?
Auditory function
Which cranial nerved emerge from the medulla?
IX, X and XII
What are the two section of medulla?
Open
Closed
What are the main features of the medulla?
Rostral continuation of spinal cord
Anterior surface has pyramids (descending tracts)
Posterior surface has dorsal columns
Posterior surface divided into open or closed
Closed has extension of central canal of spinal cord
Canal widens to from 4th ventricle open medulla
Where deos CNS blood supply come from?
2 arterial systems:
Anterior and Posterior
Which vessels is the anterior supply dereived from?
Internal carotid system
Supplies cerebral hemispheres
Which vessels is the posterior supply derieved from?
Vertebral-basilar
Supplies brainstem
