brain structure Flashcards
brain stem
controls heart rate and how fast breathing is
thalamus
receives information from the senses and forwards it to other parts of the brain
reticular formation
filters stimuli and passes on important signals. made up of nerves and runs from the spinal cord to the brainstem and thalamus. is activated when eating and sleeping
cerebellum
helps with walking and memory and is behind the brain stem
hypothalamus
regulates hunger, thirst and temperature
hippocampus
processes long term memory
amygdala
responsible for fear and anger
pituitary gland
regulates hormone release
cerebral cortex
made up of 4 lobes: frontal, temporal, parietal, and occipital
frontal lobe
coordination, speaking, and planning/ decision making
temporal lobe
processes auditory information
parietal lobe
processes information about what you touch
occipital lobe
processes visual information
