Brain Parts Flashcards
Medulla
Controls involuntary functions; breathing and heartbeat
Reticular formation
Maintains arousal and consciousness
Cerebellum
Process sensory input and coordinate voluntary movement
Thalamus
Sensory perception except smell
Hypothalamus
Connects endocrine and nervous system, regulates appetite, blood pressure and sex drive
Hippocampus
Helps process short term memories into long term memories
Basal ganglia
Part of the hippocampus: initiates voluntary movements and plays a role in motivation
Amygdala
Directs emotions and perceives other’s emotions
Nucleus accumbens
Part of the amygdala: deals with learning, addiction, motivation and reward
Corpus calosum
Connects the brain hemispheres and carries messages between them
Frontal lobe
Controls speech, judgment and impulsive behavior
Motor cortex
Part of the frontal lobe: controls voluntary movements
Broca’s area
Part of the frontal lobe: controls language expression and directs muscles for speech
Temporal lobe
Involved in hearing, language, processing and memory
Wernicke’s area
Part of the temporal lobe: comprehension of language
