bones & cartilage Flashcards
living components in a bone
-bone tissue
-cartilage
-ligaments
-tendons
functions of bones
- body support
- organ protection
- body movement
- mineral/fat storage
-calcium & phosphorus - blood cell production
-hematopoiesis
-red bone marrow
3 types of cartilage
-fibrocartilage
-elastic
-hyaline (most associated w bone)
→most bones start as hyaline cartilage
→growth in bone length/bone repair involve:
-making hyaline cartilage first then replacing with bone
cartilage components
condroblasts: create matrix
condrocytes: maintain matrix; in lacunae
matrix: collagen fibers=strength; proteglycans= resiliency by trapping water
perichondrium
double layered connective tissue; covers cartilage except at articulations
inner layer: fewer fibers; contain chondroblasts
outer layer: blood vessels and nerves penetrate it but do not enter matrix
-nutrients diffuse through matrix to reach chondrocytes
articular cartilage
hyaline cartilage that covers ends of bones at joint
-has no perichondrium; is fed by synovial membrane
types of caritiage growth
-appositional
-interstitial
appositional growth
chondroblasts in inner layer of perichondrium add new cartilage to the outside edge of existing cartilage
interstitial growth
chondroCYTES within the tissue divide and add more matrix in between the existing cells
