What do Osteogenic cells do?
They are stem cells which differentiate to from new cells
What do Osteoblasts do?
Form the bone matrix by secreting collagen. Initiates ossification
What do osteocytes do?
mature osteoblasts. form communication network
What do osteoclasts do?
Secret enzymes to break down bone. Dissolves bone matrix
What is bone tissue made of?
Mineral salts
water
collegen fibres
How does ossification work?
Salts are deposited into framework. Salts are crystallised. Tissue hardens
What are the two types of bone?
cancellous
compact
Describe what Lacuna do in the lamella?
they have osteocytes which send signals for bone formation.
they also connect to canalicilli, which forms intercellular connection.
What is Intramembranous ossification?
Bone forms directly on fibrous membrane.
osteoblasts attach onto membrane.
Primarily in compact flat bone
What is Endochondrial ossification?
Replacement of cartridge by bone. Mineral cells calsify along cartilage.

What is the Periosteum?
Tough sheaf of dense irregular connective tissue.
covers surface of bone
Collegen fibres protrude bone matrix and bind the periosteum to the bone
What is the Endosteum?
Membrane lining inner surface of bony wall. Lines spongy bone
What cartridge does growing bone have?
Growing bone has hyaline cartridge
What does the Volkmanns canal do?
nerve, blood and lymphatic vessels penetrate through the canals to connect to Medullary cavity and central Haversian canals.
Whats the role of the epiphyseal plate?
It is the site where bone growth in Length occurs. in adults its called the epiphyseal line.
