Body Organization & Terminology Flashcards
Levels of Organization In A Human
(Highest to Lowest)
- Organism
- System
- Organ
- Tissue
- Cellular
- Molecular
- Atomic
What is the cardiovascular system?
The heart, veins, arteries, and capillaries. It’s function is to transport nutrients and oxygen to the body.
What is the respiratory system?
The lungs and heart. It’s function is to transport oxygen to cells and release carbon dioxide from the body.
What is the reproductive system?
The sex organs. It’s function is to allow for reproduction and pass along DNA.
What is the digestive system?
The stomach, liver, and intestines. It’s function is to extract and deliver nutrients from the food to the body.
What is the nervous system?
The brain, spinal cord, and neurons. It’s function is to detect and respond to external and internal stimuli.
What are the four primary tissues?
- Epithelial
- Connective
- Muscular
- Nervous
Define homeostasis:
The state of balance among all body systems needed for the body to survive and function properly or maintain stable condition.
Example: Regulating temperature and sugar
Define superior:
Toward the head end (upper) of the body.
Define inferior:
Away (lower) from the head.
Define anterior:
Front of the body.
Define posterior:
Back of the body.
Define medial:
Toward the midline of the body.
Define lateral:
Away from the midline of the body.
Define internal:
Situated or occurring within or on the inside.
Define external:
Situated toward or near the outside.
Define proximal:
Toward or nearest to the trunk or the point of origin of a part.
Define distal:
Away or farthest from the trunk or point of origin of a part.
Define visceral:
Soft internal organs of the body.
Define parietal:
Of, relating to, attached to, or denoting wall of body or of a cavity or hollow structure.
