Bocchairo Study Flashcards
1
Q
what is the backround of bocchario
A
- aim of experiment was to investigate who obeyed, disobeyed and whistleblew to people with authority
- posters were put up around Amsterdam uni ot volenteer
2
Q
what was the method for boocchairo
A
- 8 pilot studies involving 92 participants were carried out in order to be sure that the procedure was both credible and ethical
- all participants were uni students
- 149 took part in experiment (96 women and 53 men)
- 138 were surveyed about how they belived the would respond in that situation
3
Q
sample/participants in bocchairo
A
- 92 people took part in pilot studies
- 149 took part in main experimental procedure (96 women, 53 men, mean age of 20.8)
- 138 participants were surveyed on how they think they would respond in that situation
3
Q
what materials/apparatus do you need in bocchairo
A
- empty room with only one person in it
- commitee forms
- questionaire, religiosity, social values, personaloty test
- pen
- controlled laboratory experiment
4
Q
what is the procedure in bocchairo
A
- participants were left alone in a room with a computer on which to compose their statement, a mailbox and some ethical forms
- if participants believe atudy was unethical they had an option of completing a form and putting it in the mailbox
- they completed personality test, and there was a religiosity test and social values participants then debreifed
- whole procedure was around 40 mins
- 138 people were asked to estimate their obedience levels and what they thought they wouldve done in the experiment
5
Q
what were the results of bocchairo
A
- there was a dramatic difference between the estimates of obedience gethered in the second procedure and the actual rates seen in the first procedure
- only 3.6% participants believed they would obey
- 64.5% believed that they would blow whistle
- 31.9% beloeved they would disobey
- actual results: 76.5% obeyed, 14.1% disobeyed, 9.4% whistleblew
6
Q
conclusions of bocchairo
A
- people are very obedient and whistleblwing is uncomon
- people overestimate the tendency to whistle blow and understimate the likelihood of obedience
- there is little to no evidence to suggest that dispositional factors effect obedience or whistleblowing
7
Q
what are the strenghts and weaknesses of the different research methods and techniques
A
- lab study: there is no IV and you need positives and negatives
8
Q
what are the strengths and wekanesses of different types of data
A
- recorded how many people whistle blew, disobeyed and obeyed in the experiement
- the volenteers were from the same place from amsterdam university
9
Q
what are the ethical considerations
A
- very ethical
- they got debriefed at the end of the experiment
- there was no physical and psycological harm
10
Q
what validility is there in bocchairo
A
- it was ecological and internally valid
- small test (small pilot)
- was valid as student normally do test not because normally not a sensory awarness
11
Q
relability in bocchairo
A
- same exact instructions
- same time given for each participant
- same enviroment for each participant
12
Q
sampling bias for bocchairo
A
- ethnocentric - all from one particular place (all of the uni students), however students could be potentially foreign
- if sampling is bias it cannot be generalised
- mostly females
13
Q
ethnocentrismin bocchairo
A
- all students are from one place (amsterdam uni)
- however there could be foreign students and transfers attending the university
