Blood Vessels Flashcards
Function of an artery
It transports oxygenated blood under high pressure away from the heart (except the pulmonary artery which transports deoxygenated blood to the lungs).
Function of a vein
It transports deoxygenated blood to the heart (except the pulmonary vein which transports oxygenated blood into the left atrium).
Function of a capillary
It allows fast exchange /diffusion of substances (e.g. glucose, oxygen goes from out of the blood into the body cells/tissues).
Coronary arteries
These are the arteries that supply the heart muscle with oxygen and glucose for respiration.
How can blocked coronary arteries lead to heart disease
Layers of fatty material builds up inside the coronary arteries, narrowing them.
This reduces the blood flow through the arteries, which then results in lack of oxygen for the heart muscle.
