Blood Vessels Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 3 blood vessels?
A
- Arteries
- Veins
- Capillaries
2
Q
What do Arteries do?
A
- Carry oxygenated blood away from the heart (apart from the Pulmonary Artery, which carries deoxygenated blood away from the heart)
- Can handle high pressure, but not high volumes.
- Narrow lumen; Thick muscular wall
- Coronary arteries supply blood to the heart muscle, directly.
- The Aorta is the largest artery in the human body.
3
Q
What do Veins do?
A
- Return deoxygenated blood from your organs to the heart (apart from the Pulmonary Vein, which carries oxygenated blood to the heart)
- Wide lumen; Thin muscular wall
- The superior and inferior Vena Cava are the largest veins in the human body.
4
Q
What do Capillaries do?
A
- Allow O2 and nutrients to move through the walls and get to organs and tissues.
- Take waste products away from tissues.
- Just one cell thick - ideal for substance exchange.
5
Q
What are the 5 functions of blood
A
- Preventing infection
- Temperature regulation
- Transport
- Exchange of substances
- Blood clotting
