what are the blood’s main functions?
transport oxygen, nutrias, remove waste, body defense, immune system, and maintain homeostasis
how much blood does an adult body have?
5 liters of blood
what is left after cells have been removed from blood?
plasma
what is erythropoietin?
a hormone from the kidneys that stimulates the production of red blood cells in the red bone marrow
what is ferritin?
stored iron in the liver, blood, and other tissues
what is iron overload?
hemochromatosis
what happens in iron overload?
large amounts of hemosiderin accumulate in organs and can cause serious organ damage
what can cause jaundice?
destruction of RBCs cause elevated bilirubin
what is leukopoiesis?
production of white blood cells.
what are the five types of leukocytes?
neutrophils, basophils, eosinophils, lymphocytes, monocytes
