Blistering Conditions Flashcards
What is pemphigus vulgaris
Autoimmune condition causing blisters on the skin and mouth
What is bullous pemphigoid
Autoimmune disease causing rash and blisters on the skin, usually in those over 60
What is the main difference between pemphigoid and pemphigus
Pemphigus = superficial blisters and erosions
Pemphigoid = Deeper blisters
Treatment of pemphigus vulgaris
High dose corticosteroids of 1mg/kg BW
Most common area that pemphigus vulgaris effects
Inside mouth and throat
What are the blisters like in pemphigus vulgaris
Superficial and can burst easily
Complications of pemphigus vulgaris
Infections of skin, weight loss from pain when eating, tooth decay and gum disease
Immunosuppressant options for pemphigus vulgaris
Methotrexate, azathioprine, rituximab
What does bullous pemphigoid usually begin as
Sore, itchy patches of skin
Different types of blistering conditions
Immunobullous diseases - bullous pemphigoid, pemphigus vulargis.
Blistering skin infections - herpes simplex
Others - porphyria cutanea tarda
Why there is difference in fragility of blisters
Intraepidermal split causes blisters which rupture easily
Sub-epidermal split causes less fragile blisters
Common causes of blistering conditions
Impetigo, insect bites, herpes simplex, herpes zoster, acute contact dermatitis, pompholyx and burns
Uncommon blistering conditions
Pemphigoid and pemphigus
Cause of blisters in bullous pemphigoid
Autoantibodies against antigens between the epidermis and dermis, causing suberpidermal split
Cause of pemphigus vulgaris
Autoantibodies against antigens within the epidermis causing intra-epidermal split in skin
