Bisphenol A Flashcards
What is Bisphenol-A (BPA) ?
It is a synthetic chemical used to make plastics
Where is BPA normally used ?
1) To coat insides of food cans , bottle tops and water supply lines
Why is BPA a concern?
BPA that seeps into food is considered safe in low doses but prolonged exposure is suspected of affecting health of children and contributes to high BP
What have scientists done in this regard ?
Developed Tiny spheres to trap BPA
How do these Tiny spheres function ?
These resemble Titanium dioxide petals. This is surfaced with Cyclodextrin - A benign sugar based molecule used in food and drugs
How does Cyclodextrin help in this process ?
It has two faced structure - Hydrophobic and Hydrophilic . BPA being Hydrophobic gets attracted to that side and gets trapped. Once trapped Reactive oxygen species (ROS) is produced that degrades BPA
