Bipolar I Disorder
Must have 1 manic episode defined as at least 1 week of mania (at least 3 manic symptoms); may include hypomania (at least 4 consecutive days of at least 3 manic symptoms); may include major depressive episode (2 weeks with at least 5 depressive symptoms; must include either depressed mood or loss of interest/pleasure).
Bipolar II Disorder
Must meet criteria for current/past hypomanic episode (4 consecutive days) AND criteria for current or past depressive episode (2 weeks).
Cyclothymic Disorder
2 years (at least 1 year in children) with numerous periods with hypomanic symptoms that do not meet criteria for a hypomanic episode and numerous periods with depressive symptoms that do not meet criteria for a major depressive episode (Bipolar II lite).
Substance/Mediation-induced bipolar and related disorder
A prominent and persistent disturbance in mood that predominates in the clinical picture and is characterized by elevated, expansive, or irritable mood, with or without depressed mood, or markedly diminished interest or pleasure in all, or almost all, activities + evidence of substance abuse.
Bipolar and related disorder due to another medical condition
A prominent and persistent period of abnormally elevated, expansive, or irritable mood and abnormally increased activity or energy that predominates in the clinical picture + evidence from history, P.E., or lab findings that disturbance is the direct pathyphysiologic consequence of another medical condition.
