Biology Topic 7 - 1/2 Flashcards
Define Habitat
Where an organism lives
Define Population
All the organisms of one species living in one habitat
Define Community
The populations of different species living in one habitat
Define Abiotic factors
Non living factors of the environment
What are 7 examples of Abiotic factors
Moisture level
light intensity
temperature
CO2 levels
O2 levels
soil pH
Wind intensity
Define Biotic factors
Living factors of the environment
What are 5 examples of Biotic Factors
New predators
Competition
Pathogens
Food
Water
What 7 things do organisms compete for
Resources
food
water
minerals
light
territory
mates
Define Interdependance
When species depend on each other for things such as food, shelter and seed dispersal
What is a knock on Effect
Any change in any environment can have major effects
What affect can a change in Abiotic factors have
Affects the population size of organisms
What affect can a change in Biotic factors have
Affects the population size of organisms which has a knock on effect due to interdependance
What are 3 types of adaptations
Structural - features of body
Behavioural - behaviour
Functional - inside organism body
Define Extremorphiles
Organisms that are adapted to live in extreme conditions
Define Producer
Produces their own food using energy from the sun
Define Primary Consumer
Organisms that feed on primary producers
Define Secondary Consumer
Organism that feed on primary consumers
Define Tertiary Consumer
Organisms that eat primary and secondary consumers
What do quadrats do
Quadrats is a square frame which help calculate the distribution of Biotic factors like plants
What are the steps of using a Quadrat
- Calculate the area of the whole field
- Place a 1m squared Quadrat on ground at random points
- Count all organisms within the Quadrat
- Place Quadrat at a few other places and calculate the mean to find how many quadrats per square metre
What do Transects do
Help find out the distribution of organisms across an area and effect on abiotic factors
What are the steps of finding Transect
- Mark out with a tape the area you want to study
- Collect data along the line by placing quadrats at regular intervals
