Biology 11-26 Flashcards
- What are the reactants for photosynthesis reactions?
Water and Carbon Dioxide
- What are the products of photosynthesis reactions?
High energy sugars and oxygen
- How does a plant obtain the reactants needed for photosynthesis?
The water is obtained from the ground. The Carbon Dioxide is breathed by humans/animals into the atmosphere which the plant then absorbs for use during photosynthesis.
- What role is played by the hydrogen ions that were released from the water molecules?
NADP+ molecules in stroma pick up the high-energy electrons along with the hydrogen ions, at the outer surface of the thylakoid membrane to become NADPH.
- What is the main photosynthetic pigment of photosynthesis?
Chlorophyll
- Explain why chlorophyll appears green in color?
Chlorophyll absorbs red and blue wavelengths but cannot absorb green so it reflects it, causing our eyes to see green.
- What is the role of chlorophyll in photosynthesis?
Chlorophyll allows plants to absorb energy from sunlight.
- Why is sunlight needed in photosynthesis?
Because the energy from the light from the sun, is absorbed. The light energy energizes the electrons which makes photosynthesis possible.
- What part of the leaf is the primary region of photosynthesis?
Chloroplasts
- Explain what happens when sunlight hits chlorophyll molecules?
As sunlight hits the chlorophyll molecules sunlight is absorbed and some of the light energy is transferred directly to electrons. By raising the energy levels of the electrons light energy can produce a steady supply of high energy electrons which make photosynthesis work?
- What is the name of the electron carrier in photosynthesis?
NADP+
- What is the purpose of light-dependent reaction?
ATP and NADPH are produced during light dependent reactions. ATP and NADPH are used to produce high energy sugars from Carbon Dioxide.
- Name the three substances that are formed when water molecules are broken down.
ATP, NADPH, and oxygen.
- What happens to the oxygen released from the water molecules?
It is released into the air.
- Describe what happens to the high-energy electrons that are produced by photosystem 1?
Pigments use energy from light to reenergize the electrons. Then they are picked up in the stroma along with hydrogen ions, and are taken to become NADPH.
