Biological Hierarchy Flashcards
what is a cell?
microscopic, self-replicating, structural and functional unit of the body that performs many different jobs. include cytoplasm, organelles, nuclei, and membrane
tissues are what? what are the four types?
collection of cells that all perform a similar function
-connective, epithelial, muscular, nervous
connective tissue
-includes bones, ligaments, cartilage- support, separate or connect the body’s various organs and tissues
epithelial tissue
-thin layers of cells that line blood vessels, body cavities and some organs
muscular tissue
contains contractile units that pull on connective tissues to create movement
nervous tissue
make up the peripheral nervous systems that transmit impulses throughout the body
what are organs?
they are a collection of tissues within the body that shares a similar function
organ systems are?
a group of organs that work together to perform a similar function
ventral vs dorsal
towards the front vs towards the back
