A

Electrophoresis separates proteins based on their migration in an electric field. In polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE), protein samples are placed on a highly cross-linked gel matrix of polyacrylamide and an electric field is applied. The matrix is buffered to a mildly alkaline pH so that most proteins are anionic and migrate toward the anode.

A modification of the standard electrophoresis technique uses the negatively charged detergent sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) to overwhelm the native charge on proteins so that they are separated on the basis of mass only
