Q

what is a population

A

a population is a group of individuals of the
same species that live in the same place and can interbreed

Q

main steps in natural selection

A

Random mutations of alleles within this gene pool may result in a new allele of a gene

give its possessor
an advantage over other individuals in the population

individual with the allele are likely to survive and reproduce

increases allele frequency

causing selection pressure

Q

what is directional selection

A

Directional selection is where selection may favour individuals that vary in one direction
from the mean of the population. This changes the characteristics of a population, hence
directional.

Q

what is stabilisng selection

A

Stabilising selection occurs where the environmental conditions remain stable, so the
individuals with phenotypes closest to the mean are favoured.

Q

an example of stabilising selction

A

An example of stabilising selection is human birth weights.
The mortality rate is higher at the extremes of birth weights, as
it seems the optimum masses are between 2.5-4kg. The infants
with higher and lower masses are more likely to die, thus are
being selected against.
