Bio chap 5 test Flashcards
Identify the type of molecule that builds all cell membranes
Phosphorus
hydrophilic and hydrophobic
Hydrophilic: water loving (attracted to water)
Hydrophobic: water fearing (repel water)
which parts of phospholipids are hydrophilic and which parts are hydrophobic
Tails = hydrophobic; Head = hydrophobic
Explain how the structure of phospholipids effects how the cell membrane is built
The phospholipids create a bi layer by the heads facing the outside water while the tails face the inside
Explain why the cell membrane is described as a “fluid mosaic”
The cell membrane is flexible like water and mosaic because of embedded proteins and carbohydrates
Describe how cell membranes are selectively permeable
Plasma membrane allows some materials to pass while excluding others
Explain the meaning of the term concentration gradient
difference in concentration of molecules across a distance
Describe how carrier proteins are used in facilitated diffusion
Molecules bind to carrier protein; transport across, released into the cell
Explain how carrier proteins exhibit selective permeability
some are specific to molecules that are allowed to pass through
Identify the solute conditions under which the sodium-potassium pump occurs
Low concentration to high concentration
Explain the difference between the two different types of endocytosis.
Pinocytosis = fluids using vesicles
Phagocytosis = large particles or whole cells using vesicles
