Bilirubin (p. 384) Flashcards
By which enzyme is heme metabolized? What is it converted to? Where does this take place?
Heme is metabolized by heme oxygenase into biliverdin, which is further reduced to bilirubin.
This occurs in the bloodstream (macrophages).
Bilirubin is a breakdown product of what?
Heme
By which organ is unconjugated bilirubin removed from the blood?
Liver
What does the liver do with unconjugated bilirubin?
Conjugate it with glucuronate and excrete in the bile
What is bilirubin conjugated to?
glucuronate
On which protein is unconjugated bilirubin transported to the liver?
Albumin
Which enzyme conjugates unconjugated bilirubin to glucunorate in the liver?
UDP-glucuronosyl-transferase
What is direct bilirubin?
bilirubin conjugated to glucunorate. water-soluble
Is direct bilirubin water soluble?
yes
what is indirect bilirubin?
unconjugated bilirubin. water insoluble
is indirect bilirubin water soluble?
no
what does conjugated bilirubin get converted into by gut bacteria?
urobilinogen
what does convert conjugated bilirubin into urobilinogen inside the gut?
bacteria
what percentage of urobilinogen gets excreted into the feces as stercobilin?
20%
how do you call urobilinogen that gets excreted into the feces?
stercobilin
