Bilge And Sullage Systems Flashcards
3 types of bilge and sullage system
- Bilge and Sullage Eductor
- The Bilge System
- The Sullage System
What do eductors do?
Remove quantities of oil/fuel/water from bilges very quickly
Excess fluid builds up on the bilges due to…
Leaks, overflows, machinery discharges, scrubbing, washing through
What does the bilge system do?
Removes excess water/oil/discharge oil to the sullage tanks through the water separator, and water is then discharged overboard
What does the sullage system do?
Retains dirty, or waste oil and fuel until it an be properly discharged.
After going through the bilge system,
Fluid is directed to the sullage tanks to be stored, or is thrown overboard
Eductors suck water from…
The bilge
HPSW provides what force for the the eductor
Motive
Draw the bilge diagram
Draw the bilge diagram
Operation of the eductors
- Open the discharge overboard
- Open motive water supplied by the HPSWM
- Open bilge suction valves
Who’s permission is needed for Use of eductors?
MEO
Describe incorrect operation
If the discharge valve is not opened first, salt water will fill the bilge through the eductor suction line, if not rectified quickly the Machinery space will flood
Hazards of oil and fuel build up in the bilge
Fire hazard
Hydrogen sulphide
To prevent hazards bilges should be
Pumped out at earliest opportunity, and levels should be kept to a minimum at all times
Bilge system operation
Sucks fluid from bilges
Separates from Oily water separator
Oil to sullage tank, water overboard
OR
Taken from holding tank
Water thrown overboard
Oil back into holding tank
