- reduces anxiety
- sedation
- hypnotic effects
BZDs MOA
bind to specific receptor which enhances effects of GABA
what is GABA
major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the CNS
BZDs Indications
- sedation
- anxiety
- insomnia (atypical)
- acute seizure tx
- ETOH withdrawal (1st line tx)
- muscle relaxation
when would you give a BZD for anxiety
acute panic attack, transitionally while waiting for SSRI to work (about 6 weeks)
which BZD would you give for acute seizure treatment and what is the route of administration
valium, IV/rectal
BZDs contraindications
- addiction to other drugs or previous benzo addiction
- sleep apnea
- comatose pt
- hypotension
- caution with elderly –> do 1/2 dose
BZDs SE
- amnesia
- respiration depression
- decreased BP, increased HR
- daytime sedation, drowsiness (depends on 1/2 life)
- disinhibition
- ataxia, dizziness –> concern for fall risk
BZDs considerations
longer half life less likely to cause withdrawal but shorter half life less likely to have hangover effect

fast, 10-20 hr

acute agitation/anxiety, procedures

intermediate, 8-37 hr
