Behavioral Science & Insider Threat Flashcards
DoD Directive 5205.16
DoD will implement the National Insider Threat Policy and Minimum Standards for Executive Branch Insider Threat Programs in accordance with ref b, e, f
the threat that an insider may do harm to the security of the US requires the integration and synchronization of programs across the dept. Threats include damage to US via espionage, terrorism, unauthorized disclosure of national security info, or through loss or degradation of resources or capabilities.
Insider Threat Programs are required to have multi-disciplinary capabilities to include which elements?
Cybersecurity
Behavioral Science or Mental Health
Counterintelligence
Human Resources
Insider Threat is limited to damage to the US through espionage or terrorism alone
False
Behavioral science
psychology, sociology, anthropology–about human behavior that can’t be predicted 100%
behavioral scientists
Training, consultation, research
Includes organizational culture (set of underlying beliefs assumptions which contribute to psychological environment of org), and individual behavior
Org behavior
loyalty, commitment to mission and org
Conformity w/security-related rules and guidelines
org citizenship behavior “voluntary actions geared toward the greater good, independent of personal gain
Willingness to seek professional help for personal/psychological issues which could decrease reliability and effectiveness
Vigilance about protecting the org and national security interests, and reporting concerning or suspicious behaviors if necessary
Behavior science
identify, explain and contextualize certain behaviors that come to insider threat HUB
Can operationalize current research to enhance mitigation efforts
Uses empirical, observational and clinical data

PERSEREC:
Three lists?
Reverse engineering cases: studying actions
The rational approach: SME relies on logic and experience
Science: discriminate between good and bad actors

Critical Pathway as it relates to insider threats
Critical path analysis: demonstrate a common set of factors, similar pattern of individual and org behavior
Application of critical pathway: provides useful categories to see if person on destructive path
Four Elements of critical pathway
Personal predispositions: med/psych, undiagnosed/treated med conditions, social networks risks, previous rule violations, personality or social skills issues, decision-making deficits (not everyone with these issues is an insider threat)
Stressors: personal, financial, professional (place additional pressures on those with certain predisposition and put farther along critical pathway.)
Concerning behaviors: interpersonal, technical, financial, personnel, mental health, social networks, suspicious travel (do these before acting directly against org)–>problematic org responses: inattention, no risk assessment, inadequate investigation, other actions that escalate–>actions that escalate risk
hostile or destructive acts: Usually occurs with planning and prep
