Basic terms Flashcards
Network
Interconnection of a set of devices capable of communication
Computer Network
Interconnection of a group of autonomus computers capable of exchanging information
The internet
Computer network that interconnects billions of computing devices
End System
Devices that are sources of data and are connected to a computer network which the user directly interacts with.
Servers
End system that provide service
Clients
End systems that request service
What connects end systems?
End Systems are connected by a network of:
1-Communication links
2-Packet switches
Which are the 2 types of Packet switches?
1-Link-layer switch(used i access networks)
2-Routers(used in the network core)
Packet
A unit of data grouped together and transferred over a computer network
Packet switch
Takes a packet arriving on one of it’s outgoing communicating links and forwards that packet on one of it’s outgoing communicating links
Modem
Translates the digital 1 and 0 from the computer into analog info for the cable, telephone, fiber optic to carry out and translates analog signals in the same way
Router
1-Connects devices to the modem through ethernet cables or wi-fi.
2-Gives each device it’s own IP address
ISP
Gives access to the internet to end systems
Protocol
Controls the sending and reciving of info within the internet
IP(Internet Protocol)
Specifies the format of the packets that are sent and recived among routers and end systems
