Bandura 1965 Flashcards
What is the aim of Bandura 1965?
To see if vicarious reinforcement has an effect on children’s behaviour
What is the sample of Bandura 1965?
66 children (33 males and 33 females) from Stanford University Nursery School
What is the procedure of Bandura 1965?
Model sat on and punched the Bobo doll ‘pow right in the nose’, hit Bobo doll’s head with a mallet ‘sockeroo’, kicked Bobo doll about the room ‘fly away’, threw rubber balls ‘bang’
rewarded for aggressive behaviour e.g. ‘strong champion’ ‘considerable treats’
punished for aggressive behaviour e.g. ‘you quit picking on that clown’, hit with rolled up newspaper
no consequences
Children were taken into a room with Bobo doll, mallet, three balls, peg board, dart guns and plastic farm animals and dolls
Two observers monitored behaviour every 5 seconds for 10 minutes
What were the results of Bandura 1965?
Model rewarded condition produced same imitation from girls (2.8) and boys (3.5) as no consequences condition
Model punished produced much less imitation in girls (0.5)
After positive incentive, imitation increased significantly for girls and boys across all conditions (all >3)
Younger children copied physical aggression more than verbal aggression
What are the conclusions of Bandura 1965?
Girls are more restrained by the threat of punishment, but effect lessens when offered positive incentives
Children are less likely to imitate role models they see being punished
What is a strength of Bandura 1965 using 66 children?
Relatively large sample of 3 to 5 year olds so results about vicarious reinforcement are representative of the wider population
What is a weakness of Bandura using 3 to 5 year olds from Stanford University Nursery School?
Results about vicarious reinforcement are not generalisable or representative of the wider population regarding teenagers/adults
What is a strength of Bandura 1965’s procedure regarding standardisation?
Models’ actions and Bobo doll are kept the same throughout the study so the study can be repeated to see if the results about vicarious reinforcement are reliable
Why is Bandura 1965 useful to society?
Shows that children learn from role models so we can change policies on watershed, age restrictions on video games, and give children good role models
Why is using 2 observers a strength of Bandura 1965?
High in inter-rater reliability so results about vicarious reinforcement is more reliable and we can repeat the study to test the reliability
Why is Bandura 1965 socially sensitive?
Parents who argue and are aggressive at home may feel bad about potentially making their children more aggressive
