Bacterial Structure and Function 2 Flashcards
What is the function of flagella?
Motility
What is the action of flagella?
Propel via rotation (NOT WHIPLIKE)
Do gram + or gram - have flagella?
Both
What do aminoglycosides target?
Attack small ribosome sub-unit and interfere with initiation and accuracy
What do tetracyclines target?
Attack small sub-unit of ribosomes and interfere with transfer of tRNA and AA to the ribosome
What do macrolides target?
Attack rRNA of large sub-unit and interfere with elongation
What is the process of spore formation?
Normal bacterial cell senses devastating devastating environmental change. Binary fission occurs and division septum forms not in the center of the cell. Larger cell is sacrificed and everything goes to the daughter cell. A thick and sturdy spore forms around the daughter cell and mother cell leaves outer coating that is very hearty
What types of stresses can spores survive?
Boiling, detergents, antiseptics, antibiotics, starvation, dehydration.
What disinfectant method is needed to get rid of spores?
autoclaving
What type of growth does binary fission produce?
Logarithmic growth
What are the stages of bacterial growth curve?
1- Lag Phase
2- Log Phase
3- Stationary phase
4- Death phase
How do obligate anaerobes derive ATP?
Fermentation
How are co-enzymes regenerated in anaerobic fermentation?
Intermediate waste products as an electron acceptor is used to re-oxidize the used co-enzymes
How are bacteria identified via fermenation in the lab?
Each bacteria have a repertoire of molecules that it can ferment and waste products that it produces
What do obligate anaerobic bacteria lack?
Superoxide dismutase and catalase enzymes
