Bacteria Phyla Characteristics Flashcards
To learn the different bacteria phyla and their individual characteristics. (Little focus on the Bacteria themselves).
Characteristics of Phylum Tenericutes
They have no cell wall.
They are Pleomorphic.
Have very small genomes.
Characteristics of Actinobacteria
Gram Positives
Are shaped like clubs.
By Clubs we mean those ones used by cavemen.
Filamentous Actinobacteria
A branch of Actinobacteria’s which have Filaments. They produce Hyphae and Mycelia.
Some release antibiotics.
What is Hyphae
Hyphae are the reproductive spores in the Filamentous Actinobacteria.
Who are the Phylum Bacteroidetes
Gram Negative
Have very few unifying characteristics.
Phylum Acidobacteria
Generally hard to grow in lab
Make up 20-50% soil microbial life
Phylum Chlamydiae
Gram- and Lack Peptidoglycan
Obligate intracellular Parasites
Have a very unique life cycle.
What are the 2 life cycle stages of the Chlamydiae
Elementary and Reticulate body.
What happens in the Elementary body stage of the Chlamydiae
A small and dense phase, capable of resisting drying out and is who initiates the infection.
What happens in the Reticulate body stage of the Chlamydiae
Large and vegetative. Multiplies in the host before turning into Elementary body when the host starts dying.
Phylum Planctomycetes
Budding and Appendaging bacteri
Have a protein stalk which they use for attachment.
Lack Peptidoglycan
Phylum Cyanobacteria
Filamentous with some forming Heterocysts.
Are Photosynthetic
All are autotrophs
Have very low nutritional requirements.]
Gram Negative.
What are Heterocysts and what phyla has them
The specialised Nitrogen fixing cells and it is the Cyanobacteria which have them.
Where is Photosynthesis carried out in the Cyanobacteria
In the Thylakoid membrane.
Phylum Proteobacteria
Most metabolically diverse group. Includes 6 different classes
